Loan Sharks: Red Flags to Watch For
When money is short, a quick cash offer can feel like a lifeline. But borrowing from an illegal lender, often called a loan shark, can make things much worse.
The need for safe support is clear. MaPS MoneyView Wales 2025 found that 13% of adults in Wales show strong indications of needing debt advice, with a further 20% at risk. People under pressure may be more vulnerable to unsafe borrowing.
A loan shark may seem friendly at first. They might be someone local, someone on social media, or someone introduced by a friend. But illegal lending can lead to threats, fear and spiralling repayments.
Warning signs
Be careful if someone offers money with no paperwork, refuses to say what the total repayment will be, adds extra charges, takes your bank card or valuables, or uses threats and pressure.
You are not in trouble
If you have borrowed from a loan shark, you have not done anything wrong. The lender is the one acting illegally. Confidential help is available, and you do not have to face the situation alone.
Do not borrow to repay unsafe debt
Taking out more credit to pay a loan shark can make the problem bigger. Speak to a trusted support service such as Stop Loan Sharks Wales before making another payment or taking another loan.
Look for responsible options
A credit union is a legal, regulated and community-based lender. It can be a safer place to talk about affordable borrowing, especially if mainstream credit is difficult to access.
Quick cash can come with a high price. If something feels wrong, pause, ask questions and get help.
